We demonstrate our approach to measuring abilities of 268 women from the results of women's Alpine downhill skiing competitions recorded over the period 2002–2013. In the next section of the paper, we develop an econometric method to attempt to disentangle the contributions of driver skill and car technology in determining the order of finish.

Our purpose is not to suggest which drivers were the best (Eichenberger andStadelmann , Phillips , Bell et al ), or to determine if F1 seasons achieve competitive balance among the racing teams (Judde, Booth and Brooks ). We believe it is quite logical that driving skill, car and team technology, and the interaction between the two contribute in their separate ways to race outcomes. This means the four-time world champion will start from the very back of the grid. The race stewards also hit Vettel with three penalty points. At no other GP would he have won more, with five wins at Canada and Hungary too.

Regardless of his status though, Hunt was an undeniable talent. Once entering F1 in 1973, Hunt's first few seasons were a bit rocky. Making his debut with Hesketh racing, an aristocrat-owned, 'just-for-fun' team, Hunt led the team to some surprising results and even finished fourth in the 1975 drivers' championship.
